.22LR Rifle Owner's Manual Copies $6 each
AK-22 AM-180 AP-74 AP-80 AT-22 M-1600 PPS TOMMY

"Rockin' Rimfires"?

That's the phrase I coined to describe military lookalike rifles & paramilitary-looking rifles which are chambered in .22 long rifle (.22LR). A limited number of pistols may be included in this lineup based on their "coolness" factor, but I prefer to focus on rifles.

Why the interest?

Because they give you the "cool" factor at a much lower cost. When you see some of the pictures, I bet you'll agree! Also because some of them are pretty hard to find, and information and parts seem to be pretty hard to come by, too. So I wanted to make this site a good resource.

Military Copies & Lookalikes

Some types in this category include the M-16, AK-47, French MAS / FAMAS, Galil-22, M-1 carbine, M-16 & CAR-15, Soviet PPS, etc.

Lakeside/Tippman: Lakeside Machine is proud to announce the purchase of the "Tippman Arms Company". All models of the miniature belt-fed 22 originals are now available in semi-auto to civilians and full-auto to class 3 dealers/class 2 manufacturers.
See:
http://www.lakesideguns.com for more info, photos, and their entire inventory!

AK-47 copies

AK-47 copies, as with most military copies, were and are made by more than one company. Some are better than others. Most of them - and their parts - seem to interchange, with the only difference being in nameplates. See the
AK-47 copy page for more. Also see KBI's Web site at http://www.kbi-inc.com. NOTE: KBI seems to have been folded into the Charles Daly company, and they recently stoppe doffering rifles. They may not have parts for the older lookalikes, etc.

Galil copies, as with many military copies, were and are made by more than one company. Some are better than others. Most of them - and their parts - seem to interchange, with the only difference being in nameplates. See the
Galil copy page for more. Page lacks a lot of details, but there some there.

M-1 carbine copies

The M-1 carbine such as models by Erma-Werke EM-1 & Iver-Johnson carbine M1.
02/26/2002: Notes from a visitor:
"When you are working on the M1 carbine page, don't forget the Marlin Model 989 M2 carbine. I own one from the early '60's and it looks very much like the M1 carbine. Mine has only two letters on it, instead of a S/N, and I am researching it. It came standard with a 7 round mag, and is basically the same as a current Marlin model 70, papoose, etc, but with M1 carbine styling, and a sort of Star Trek looking scope." UPDATE 09/06/2003: The Marlin model 989M2 (or 989 M2) is the same model as a Montgomery Ward (Wards) 70, Westernfield (Western Field) 70 and the Glenfield 70. Parts for them are available from the Gun Parts Corp. at http://e-gunparts.com. Look for all models in your searches! GPC also has breakdowns you can download.

owner's manuals - The "Tommy Gun" in .22LR... How's that for cool? These were made by the same folks who made the original, which has seen service with civilians, police, and even the military in World War II. Most replacement parts and magazines (even the drums) are available from Gun Parts Corporation.

10/27/2000: Flash!!! I spoke with a lady at the Indy 1500 gun show, and she was selling 30-round magazines for $75 each. They were curved, thin and smallish. She said they fit the Auto-0rdnance M1927-A3 AND the Squires-Bingham! She only sells at shows, and did not have a card... *grr!*

Some types in this category include the American 180 / AR-180, AMT Lightning, Calico .22LR series guns, Feather AT-22, Federal Engineering Corporation XC-220, etc.

AMT Lightning 25/22
coming soon
NEWSFLASH! Survival Enterprises has bought the entire remaining stock of AMT Lightning parts from AMT / Galena Industries. See their parts list here. The AMT Lightning 25/22 is essentially a highly modified copy of the Ruger 10/22. Parts for a 10/ss should fit a Lightning. Visit the AMT page for information, photos, values, and more.

American 180 / AM-180 / SAR-180/275
se the AM-180 page
click here for in-depth info, photos, values, etc.
The American 180, or AM-180, holds 177 rounds of .22RL ammunition. Variants include the SAR-180. As far as I know, it's the king of firepower among "Rockin' Rimfires". The AM-180 page has plenty of pictures, information, and all the contact information for the official American 180 parts & accessories supplier, E&L Manufacturing.

Calico Light Weapon Systems
visit the unofficial Calico site
click here for in-depth info, photos, values, etc.
In addition to their 9mm models, Calico offers (or in the past has offered) a variety of interesting .22LR carbines - and even a pistol - which utilize 100-round drum magazines, also referred to as helical-feed magazines. Also order replacement .22LR magazine springs.

Feather Industries / FeatherUSA/AWI LLC

owner's manuals - The original Feather Industries is out of business. I think that Mitchell bought them out, then Mitchell went out of business. Nevertheless, I'll also cover the Mitchell LW-22. Then apparently FeatherUSA/AWI LLC bought some or all of the rights to produce the Feather line. Apparently they only make "post-ban", fixed-stock types. Consult the FeatherUSA/AWI LLC Web site for more information. In the mean time, you can visit my Feather page for more info, photos, values, etc.

Federal Engineering Corp. XC-220
top of page
visit the XC-220 page
The FEC XC-220 was a very futuristic-looking, yet simple gun. You can view a scan of an article about the XC-220 which appeared in the "Dope Bag" section of the July 1984 issue of American Rifleman magazine. VIEW PAGE 1 - VIEW PAGE 2. Also, A while back, a lady who was associated with one of the folks at FEC promised me some good photos, but she didn't follow through. *grin*

Gatling guns
top of page
visit the .22 Gatling gun page
click here for in-depth info, photos, values, etc.
This is where it gets to be even more fun! These neat little gems come as kits which usually include everything but the two rifles and magazines. You assemble it, load the mags, point it downrange, and crank away all your ammo in no time! See the .22LR Gatling gun page for more info & photos. There are other variants, made for two M-1 carbines, SKSs, etc., but I'm only covering the .22LR types for now. There has been a lot of inquiries about these lately, so I thought it only right that I pull some information and photos together.

Information Sources
top of page

Here's where it gets tricky, and that's why this page exists... These are some of the sources I used:

  • "The World's Deadliest Rimfires Battleguns" by J. M. Ramos, published 19## by Paladin Press. This book was a major source for much of this information. It's out of print, but a few copies are out there. I just bought one via www.half.com. I got lucky!

  • The Gun Parts Corporation catalog has exploded views and reference material for some models.

  • Gun Digest, Guns Illustrated, and similar reference books.
